Debby Rihn-Harvey of La Porte, Texas, was crowned the overall 2006 U.S. National Aerobatic Champion at the U.S. National Aerobatic Championships in Denison, Texas that convened on Friday, September 29th. Rihn-Harvey is an eight-time winner of the Betty Skelton trophy that is awarded to the highest placing woman in the powered Unlimited category at the U.S. Nationals. Now, she can add the Mike Murphy Cup to her award repertoire which is awarded to the overall winner of the powered Unlimited category and the reigning U.S. National Aerobatic Champion. Say you’re an aerobatic pilot who wants to practice some maneuvers and your planned practice area is within four miles from the center of an airway and/or you intend to practice below 1,500 feet. You can’t just hop in the cockpit of your Pitts at the local airport and begin doing barrel rolls and hammerheads.

The Advanced World Aerobatic Team landed second place, only 0.5 percent away from Team Russia at the Advanced World Aerobatic Championships which finished in Radom, Poland on August 13. Team medals are based on the scores of the top three pilots from each country.  For the USA, team member Rob Holland finished second in the contest (78.51%), Jeff fourth (77.76%) and Hector Ramirez fifth overall (77.56%).

EAA, the International Aerobatic Club (IAC), and the aerobatic community mourn the passing of Bob Heuer, who passed on Friday, June 16 after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. He was 79. Bob was IAC’s first President and served in that capacity from the group’s formation in 1970 until the summer of 1973. He subsequently served on the IAC Board of Directors and was IAC #2, right behind Paul H. Poberezny.
